With great sadness we mark death of Mostyn Toghill

It is with great sadness that Cambrian Credit Union marks the death of one of its directors Mostyn Toghill.

Mostyn , who died on 24 October, was a long serving director of Cambrian Credit Union. Mostyn believed passionately that credit unions in Wales could be as ubiquitous as those in Ireland and the United States. Despite long term illness he worked hard for twenty five years to make sure that the people of North Wales had a thriving, sustainable alternative to high cost credit.

Mostyn was one of the volunteers who worked together in the late 1990’s to set up Y Llechen Credit Union in Caernarfon and subsequently served on Y Llechen’s board. A keen believer in co-operation between cooperatives he was active in the North Wales Chapter of the Association of British Credit Unions. The good relationships forged in chapter laid a solid foundation for the merger of five credit unions to form North Wales Credit Union (subsequently Cambrian Credit Union). Mostyn served as Y Llechen’s representative on the shadow board preparing for the merger which was successfully achieved at the beginning of 2011.

Mostyn never lost sight of the importance of credit unions being grounded in their local communities. However he also had a vision that credit unions could be more than simply neighborhood savings and loans clubs and was a keen advocate for new services; new technology and better ways of serving members; and for attracting a wider variety of people into membership.

Mostyn was a lifelong advocate for equality, fairness and social justice and sought out ways to serve his community and improve the lot of others. As well as his involvement in the credit union he had an active interest in working for those living with illness. He volunteered on several patient representative bodies in Wales, helping to give a voice to patients, particularly in the treatment and management of chronic conditions.

The board will miss his friendliness, humor and the passion with which he followed and shared his many and wide ranging interests from geology and rock music to Cardiff City Football Club.

Mostyn is survived by his wife Teresa and three daughters. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
