Shining a Light on Illegal Money Lending

Did you catch our colleague Rob on Tuesday’s (16th December 2025) episode of BBC Morning Live? He joined the team at Stop Loan Sharks Wales and a brave survivor to shine a light on the devastating impact of illegal money lending.

Reflecting on the experience, Rob said:

"It was a privilege to appear on BBC Morning Live this Tuesday to shine a light on the devastating impact of illegal money lending. I want to say a huge thank you to the BBC and especially the Stop Loan Sharks Wales team. Their tireless support for the brave survivor we spoke with was instrumental in helping them reclaim their life and bringing a predatory lender to justice."

The Danger of the "Helpful" Colleague

The segment highlighted the case of a lender who posed as a "helpful" colleague to target nearly 30 people—using psychological tactics and predatory interest rates to trap them in a cycle of debt.

Cases like this—where lenders pose as "friendly" coworkers—show why ethical alternatives are so vital. Credit Unions like Cambrian offer a safe, member-owned lifeline. We provide fair, regulated, and affordable ways to borrow that keep our local communities out of the hands of sharks.

⚖️ A Victory for Justice

The recent sentencing of this individual is a massive win, but the real story is the power of a victim’s voice. By coming forward, this survivor reclaimed their life and protected others from the same fate.

🛡️ Choose a Safer Path

Financial stress is real, but "workplace loans" from unregulated individuals are never the answer. Protect yourself by:

  • Choosing Credit Unions: Member-owned, ethical, and capped interest rates.

  • Checking the FCA Register: If they aren’t listed, they aren’t legal.

  • Demanding Paperwork: No contract is a major red flag.

🆘 You Are Not Alone

If you feel trapped by an unauthorised lender, remember: The lender is the one breaking the law, not you. If you’re struggling, please don't suffer in silence. There is always a safer path.

  • Stop Loan Sharks Wales: Call 0300 123 3311 for confidential, specialist support.
